Certificate in Sound

Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT) has recently introduced the Certificate in Sound, an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of sound across various disciplines. This certificate program offers courses in sound studies, music composition, sound design, and audio engineering, allowing students to explore the multifaceted nature of sound in contemporary contexts. The curriculum is structured to include both core and elective courses, enabling students to tailor their learning experience to their specific interests within the field of sound.

Philippe Pasquier, the director of the Metacreation Lab for Creative AI, discusses the Certificate in Sound in the Speakable Podcast.

Autolume Workshops Held in Toronto and Montreal

In October, the Metacreation Lab for Creative AI conducted two successful Autolume workshops in Toronto and Montreal. In these sessions, Metalab’s PhD student Arshia Sobhan and the director Philippe Pasquier, introduced artists and researchers to Autolume, our no-code, user-friendly visual synthesizer that leverages Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for creative expression. In Toronto, the workshop took place on October 23-24 at OCAD University, and in Montreal, on October 30-31 at NAD. These workshops provided participants with hands-on experience in training AI models using their own datasets, and also focused on real-time generation and interactive art possibilities. These workshops empowered artists from various disciplines to explore personalized generative AI workflows, fostering unique artistic expressions beyond conventional methods.

Using Autolume is now easier than ever with a simple executable file. No complex setup, just download, extract, and run. (Requires Windows with an NVIDIA GPU—RTX 2070 or higher recommended)

Metacreation Lab at Ars Electronica 2024 with Autolume Exhibition

The Metacreation Lab for Creative AI took part in the prestigious Ars Electronica festival in September as part of the Campus Exhibition with four artworks. The Autolume Exhibition explored the intersection of personalized generative AI and artistic expression, showcasing innovative works that challenge the standardized aesthetics of commercial AI systems through small data and model crafting approaches. The exhibited artworks included Longing + Forgetting, which explores pathfinding algorithms as metaphors for personal and collective searches. Dreamscape, delves into AI-generated visuals through striking stills and video loops. Ensemble merges Persian calligraphy with generative AI, creating evolving forms paired with immersive soundscapes. Autolume Mzton highlights audio-reactive visuals inspired by analog cinema, exploring themes of renewal and new beginnings.

Longing + Forgetting in Shanghai

We are excited to announce that “Longing + Forgetting,” is being showcased in Shanghai, as part of the prestigious NOWNESS Short Film Awards: Cinema in Meta Program, and the Meta Media Art Festival. These festivals spotlight the convergence of art and technology, blending interdisciplinary art, design, and science to envision a digitally enriched urban future. They also explores the evolving relationship between emerging technologies and creative filmmaking, delving into AI’s influence on storytelling and aesthetics

“Longing + Forgetting” investigates the idea of generative choreographies amongst multiple video agents, or 'digital performers'. Unforeseen encounters create momentary connections and disruptions, embracing the temporary, forgettable, nature of data.
